Make Every Day Mother's Day: Top 5 Questions Mums-to-Be Ask Their Chiropractor - Answered!

happy mothers dayBy Dr. Brenda Hiew (Chiropractor)

May is a month filled with meaning. As the warmth of summer gives way to the cool relief of autumn, we also pause to honour the incredible women who nurture, guide, and love us—our mothers.

At our clinic, we believe every day should feel like Mother’s Day, and one of the ways we give back is by supporting mums-to-be through their pregnancy journeys.

Pregnancy is a time of joy, transformation—and yes, plenty of change. For many expecting mothers, these changes come with discomfort, physical strain, or uncertainty, particularly for first-time mums. Chiropractic care can be a gentle, natural support during this time, but it’s completely normal to have questions before starting.

Here are five of the most common questions I receive from pregnant women—and the answers you deserve:

1. Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Yes, chiropractic care is safe when provided by a practitioner trained in prenatal care. We use gentle, low-force techniques tailored to your changing body and comfort level. If you have complications in your pregnancy, we always recommend speaking to your OBGYN or midwife before beginning care.

2. How can chiropractic help during pregnancy?

Chiropractic can relieve many common pregnancy complaints, including lower back pain, pelvic pressure, sciatica, round ligament pain, rib pain, and headaches. Adjustments also help maintain proper pelvic alignment—creating more space for baby to move into an ideal position and potentially allowing for a smoother labour and delivery. Care also supports nervous system function, which can reduce stress, improve sleep, and ease nausea.

3. When should I start, and how often should I come in?

Many mums start chiropractic care between 12-16 weeks, though it’s safe to begin earlier. Others seek care in their final trimester to prepare for birth. Frequency depends on your unique needs—we’ll guide you based on your exam results and goals.

4. Can I lie on my stomach during pregnancy at the chiropractor?

Yes! We have special pregnancy support pillows that allow you to lie face-down safely and comfortably. If you’d prefer to sit, lie on your back, or use alternative positions, we’ll tailor your care accordingly.

5. Can chiropractic help turn a breech baby or bring on labour?

Chiropractors don’t manually turn babies, but techniques like the Webster Technique help realign the pelvis, potentially encouraging baby to move into a more optimal position. While we can’t promise to “induce” labour, many mums have found adjustments helpful in the final stages of pregnancy—and often, labour follows shortly after!

Gentle, Natural Support for Every Stage of Motherhood

Whether you’re newly pregnant or in your final weeks, chiropractic care can help you feel more comfortable, more supported, and more empowered during this special time.
